Meet Penny Hummel
The 2013-14 president of the Oregon Library Association, library consultant Penny Hummel has twelve years of management experience in public libraries both large and small, as well as prior volunteer experience as a library advocate, Friends president and Library Foundation trustee. Her areas of practice include marketing, fundraising and organizational development. In 2013, Penny was selected as a fellow in the Public Library Association’s Leadership Academy, participating in a week-long intensive training focused on enhancing the position of libraries within their communities.
From 2009-2013, Penny was Director of the Canby Public Library (Canby, OR, population 15,000), where she oversaw planning for a new library/civic center, rebuilt the library’s collection, expanded services to Spanish-speaking residents and raised over $562,000 to support library services and capital improvements. From 2001 – 2009, Penny was the Marketing and Communications Manager for Multnomah County Library, where she created the award-winning “Everybody Reads” project, managed the redesign of the library’s website, and oversaw production of “Welcome to the Library,” a video series in Vietnamese, Russian and Chinese. During her two year tenure as President of the Friends of Multnomah County Library, Penny led the Friends’ efforts to open a retail store in the renovated Central Library in downtown Portland in 1997.
